Meet Diego.

When a sibling group of four came to live with Yvette—a longtime school bus driver and dedicated foster mom—she immediately sensed that Diego was special. When she learned that the children would be placed for adoption, they had already found their loving home with Yvette. Bright and eager to learn, Diego entered school with enthusiasm, but he faced challenges with reading.

“It’s not fun when you’re lacking something,” Yvette said. “Diego was lacking reading skills. And you guys… you helped him. You all are the star at the top of his Christmas tree. You light up his world.”

Through Wayfinders’ partnership with West End School (WES), Diego received one-on-one intervention that finally unlocked the joy of learning. His teacher and Wayfinders interventionist never gave up, working together until Diego began to thrive.

Today, Diego is 10 years old and already talking about going to college.

“Please tell anyone investing in this program that they saved my life. They saved his life. These kids need help. You’re keeping them out of jail, the hospital, death. Please thank anyone who contributes. I wish I could hug every one of them.”

Wayfinders supports students like Diego from all angles — in the classroom, at home, and through strong partnerships with schools like WES. Yvette knows WES well. She attended when it was Jessie R. Carter Elementary. Now in her 60s, she says:

“This is a love building. It was back then, and it is now. Once you step through those doors, you’re safe. The love never left those walls. It was just waiting for more children. It’s the best place in the world for a Black boy. And soon, a Black girl.”

Yvette speaks with gratitude for Jacquelyn, Wayfinders interventionist:

“He talked about her every day, even on days he didn’t see her. He said, ‘She breaks down concepts in a way I understand.’ If you asked him, he would say it’s because of her that his reading improved.”

She also praises Ms. J, his classroom teacher. We’ll never forget the day Ms. J pulled us into her room to brainstorm new ways to help Diego. Two professionals, sharing love for one boy, refusing to give up. That’s the magic of what we do.
